Theoretical and Finite Element Modeling of Fine Kirschner Wires in Ilizarov External Fixator

چکیده
The mechanical behavior of the transosseous elements is a defining factor in the overall stiffness, stability, and reliability of an external fixation system. Mechanics involving the application of thin Kirschner wires in Ilizarov apparatus is yet to be fully explained. To address this problem, load-deflection behavior of the pretensioned thin wires laterally loaded by the bone is necessary to be studied. In this paper, the lateral deflections of thin Kirschner wires are studied both theoretically and computationally. Fully three dimensional finite element (FE) modeling and analyses were performed in which the bone was modeled as a hollow cylinder, and the wire-bone interaction was assumed to be frictionless. The mathematical solution resulted in new exact solutions for the deflection as well as final tension in the wires subjected to the lateral loading under a cylinder representing the bone. Results from the FE analyses turned out to be very close to those from the mathematical solution. The results obtained from theory and FE method are comparable to published experimental findings. Some aspects of the pretensioned thin wire behavior in ring fixation systems, e.g., stiffness-tension proportionality, were revealed in the results. The current study adds to the existing knowledge on the general behavior of tensile elements. DOI: 10.1115/1.4001815

Analytical modelling of Kirschner wires in Ilizarov circular external fixator as pretensioned slender beams.
Transfixing thin Kirschner wires (K-wires) are the key components of the Ilizarov fixator regarding its axial stiffness, which affects the mechanobiological environment in which bone is healed. Mechanically speaking, K-wires are slender beams that are axially tensioned, then fixed and transversely loaded. The existing solutions to such a problem either do not accommodate any axial loading prior...

The study describes a computational approach for predicting the mechanical response of different configurations of the Ilizarov external fixation system. The Ilizarov type fixators are now being used to an increasing extend to stabilize bone fractures and for limb lengthtening [5,6] and its functions are investigated using numerical [e.g. 3,7] and experimental [e.g. 1,2] techniques. The device ...

متن کاملMathematical modeling of fixation of a bone fragment in a new Double-needle external Fixator compared to hoffmann ii fixator.
The outcome of rehabilitation after multiple bone fractures can be improved, and the reduction of the rate of amputation due to severe trauma can be achieved with the early use of external fixators [1, 2]. Effectiveness of the fixator depends on the stability of the bone fragments during the evacuation of a patient to specialized facilities [3, 4]. The paper is devoted to the mathematical model...
متن کاملA biomechanical analysis of the Ilizarov external fixator.
Five configurations of the Ilizarov fixator were analyzed in vitro. The overall stiffness, shear stiffness, and axial motion of the fracture site were determined. The data were compared with the results of eight conventional one-half frame fixators previously tested in the same manner. The Ilizarov fixator allowed significantly more axial motion at the fracture site during axial compression tha...
